GHMC Election Results 2020, Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Election/Polls Results 2020 Updates:
The civic body election is a prestige battle for three parties — the TRS, BJP and AIMIM. With the counting of votes for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election underway, results have been declared for 100 of the 150 divisions.
The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti(TRS) is currently leading the tally, winning 42 seats, followed by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) which has won 34l. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which aspires to emerge as the main challenger to TRS, has won 22 divisions so far. The Congress, which ultimately is being pushed to the sidelines, do have two divisions to its credit now.
The results of the elections will determine the fate of 1,122 candidates in 150 divisions of the civic body. The counting of votes is likely to be slower than usual. The SEC opted to use ballot papers for the elections in light of Covid-19. In fact, the poll body has made elaborate arrangements to ensure the safety of poll workers.
Earlier on Friday, the Telangana High Court kept in abeyance an order of the Telangana State Election Commission that allowed counting of ballot papers with distinguishing markings instead of the arrow cross-mark rubber stamp as valid votes. It, however, allowed counting of votes to continue.
Though the run-up to the polls saw a high-pitched campaign by the parties. But the turnout of the voters on December 1 was an unimpressive. It was46.55 per cent (34.50 lakh) out of the total 74.67 lakh voters.
