Sushila Devi is the first Indian woman in history to win several medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Sushila Devi Likmabam won India’s sixth medal in Judoka, making her the first weightlifter outside of the weightlifting discipline At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022,. When it came to women’s 48 kg, she took home the silver medal. South African Michaela Whitebooi won the championship, defeating her.

Both judokas failed to score a single point at the end of regulation time, so the final turned out to be a back-and-forth contest with neither giving an inch until the final buzzer. The match then entered a round of “golden scores,” where the South African judoka won the gold medal by putting Sushila Devi’s shoulders to the ground to score a point.

Sushila Devi’s preparation for the decisive match against the South African went quite smoothly. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Malawian judoka Harriet Boniface 10-0. She defeated Mauritian judoka Priscilla Morand in the semifinals, thrashing her 10-0.

Her second silver medal from the Commonwealth Games is this one. Sushila Devi, who was 19 at the time, took home the silver medal in the same category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She is now the most successful Indian judoka in the competition’s history and the first from her country to take home two medals at the biennial competition. She also became the third Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, joining Sanket Sargar and Bindyarani Devi.

In reality, Sushila Devi qualified for judo at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, making her the first Indian to do so.

Vijay Kumar Yadav earned India’s second medal at the sport event shortly after Sushila Devi did. In the men’s 60 kg division, he triumphed over Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus to win the bronze medal. India has now secured a ninth medal at the Commonwealth Games in the women’s four lawn bowls category, bringing their total to eight.

Judo

Sushila Devi Likmbam defeated Malawian Harriet Bonface to advance to the women’s 48kg quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she will compete against Priscilla Morand of Mauritius.

Jasleen Singh Saini was defeated by Finlay Allan of Scotland in the semifinals. But will compete for the bronze medal in the following match.

Joshua Katz of Australia defeated Vijay Kumar Yadav in a fiercely contested quarterfinal. Dynlan Munro of Scotland will be his next opponent if he wants to keep winning medals.

Suchika Tariyal defeated South African Donne Breytenbach to advance to the bronze medal round.

The game, which appeared to be lopsided and favouring India, finished in a draw.

Scores are now tied at 4-4, reversing the situation from the previous quarter.

Lawn Bowl

After defeating New Zealand 16-13 in the women’s fours semifinal, the Indian lawn bowls team secured a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The women’s fours team, which consists of Lovely Choubey as the lead, Pinki as the second, Nayanmoni Saikia as the third, and Rupa Rani Tirkey as the skip, will compete for the gold medal on Tuesday against South Africa.
