The ongoing debate surrounding the use of “India” or “Bharat” as the official name of the country has taken an interesting turn, with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor proposing a clever and satirical alternative. Tharoor, known for his wit and eloquence, suggested that the opposition bloc could adopt the acronym “BHARAT,” standing for the “Alliance for Betterment, Harmony And Responsible Advancement for Tomorrow.” This suggestion comes amidst the controversy sparked by President Droupadi Murmu’s use of ‘President of Bharat’ in G20 dinner invitations instead of the customary ‘President of India.’
The naming row escalated further when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invite for the G20 Summit also referred to him as the ‘Prime Minister of Bharat.’ This change in nomenclature has ignited a larger debate on the country’s official name.
Shashi Tharoor’s satirical suggestion seems to be a tongue-in-cheek response to the ongoing debate and an ironic commentary on the opposition bloc’s nomenclature. The Congress MP is part of the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), and his comment alludes to the idea of the opposition naming themselves BHARAT in anticipation of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, had previously stated that the objective of INDIA (alliance) parties is BHARAT, which stands for “Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation And Trust.” He emphasized that unity and harmony should be the focus, even as the naming debate continues.
Shashi Tharoor, while acknowledging that there is no constitutional objection to using ‘Bharat’ as the country’s name, expressed hope that the government would recognize the “incalculable brand value” associated with ‘India’ and not completely abandon it.
The India-Bharat naming debate continues to be a subject of discussion and speculation, with individuals from various spheres sharing their perspectives and engaging in the discourse over the nation’s identity.
As the debate unfolds, Shashi Tharoor’s humorous proposal adds a touch of satire to the ongoing controversy, highlighting the complexities surrounding the issue of the country’s name.
