Margaret Alva defeated by Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in vice Presidential election of India. Dhankar elected as India’s 16th Vice President on Saturday (August 6, 2022). According to the Election Commission, Dhankhar, the NDA nominee, received 528 first preference votes, while Margaret Alva, the opposition candidate, received 182 votes. After losing to Dhankhar, Margaret Alva stated that the vice-presidential election is over, but the “battle for protecting our constitution, strengthening our democracy, and restoring the dignity of Parliament” will continue.
On her official Twitter account, the former Union Minister Margaret Alva Congratulated Dhankhar on his election as Vice President and thanked all Opposition leaders and MPs from all parties who voted for her in this election.
Margaret Alva tweeted “This election provided an opportunity for the opposition to work together, to put the past behind them, and to build trust among themselves.
Unfortunately, some opposition parties chose to directly or indirectly support the BJP in an attempt to derail the idea of a united opposition “Margaret Alva stated.

President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulate Jagdeep Dhankhar on becoming Vice President of India.
President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Jagdeep Dhankhar on his election as the country’s 14th Vice President, saying that the country will benefit from his extensive public service.

Who is India’s new Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar?
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, in an agrarian household in a village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, and has over three decades of administrative experience. He earned his high school diploma from Sainik School in Chittorgarh and his bachelor’s degree in physics. In addition, he holds an LLB from the University of Rajasthan.
The 71-year-old is one of the state’s most prominent lawyers, having practised in both the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
Dhankhar entered public life after being elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu on a Janata Dal ticket in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections. In 1990, he was also a Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs. Former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal influenced his politics at first.
Dhankhar, a Jat, later shifted his focus to state politics and was elected to the Rajasthan Assembly from the Kishangarh constituency in Ajmer district in 1993. In 2019, he was also appointed Governor of West Bengal.
