Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy “Barbie” has been a big hit worldwide, but its performance in India tells a different story. The film started well in India during its opening weekend but saw a decline in box office earnings as the week progressed. On its fifth day, Tuesday, Barbie earned only Rs 2.30 crore, the same as Monday, which is a significant drop from the impressive Rs 7.15 crore it earned on Sunday.
On the other hand, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” continued to perform well in India, making Rs 6.25 crore on Tuesday and Rs 7 crore on Monday. While Barbie struggled to keep up with Oppenheimer in India, it achieved a remarkable feat in the international markets. It crossed $188 million at the North American box office and was set to cross the $200 million mark. The film earned $194.3 million at the international box office, bringing its global total to $382 million. On Monday, Barbie made $26 million, becoming the best Monday gross in Warner Bros’ history. Its first-weekend earnings of $162 million made it the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman, surpassing “Captain Marvel.”
Oppenheimer’s total earnings stood at $209 million, with $95 million from domestic box office collections and $114 million from international markets.
Some critics, including The Indian Express’ Shalini Langer, noted that Barbie avoided tackling uncomfortable questions about the character’s portrayal and its impact on real women. The film seemed to be influenced by the Mattel brand, but these important questions were treated lightly or pushed to the background.
While Barbie achieved enormous success globally, it faced challenges in the Indian market against Oppenheimer. Nonetheless, the film has broken records and marked a significant achievement in empowering women in the film industry. However, some reviewers have pointed out the lack of depth in addressing critical issues related to Barbie’s portrayal.
