Annu Kapoor has been an actor for over four decades, but he never imagined himself in the business. Annu wanted to serve his motherland because his maternal grandfather, paternal grandfather, and uncles were all revolutionaries during India’s independence struggle. The actor received a 93 percent in his Class 12 examination, but his parents did not have the financial means to support his ambitions of becoming an IAS, and Annu was forced to join his father’s theatre company instead to help support the family.
Annu Kapoor recently told the Hindustan Times that while he was unable to fulfil his dream of becoming an IAS officer, he takes his job as an actor very seriously in order to serve his motherland. However, he has no intention of entering politics.
He stated, “I’m not cut out for politics. I’m not cut out to be a politician. I was explaining the literal meaning of a politician in one of my shows. Poly means many, and tician means’rengne waale keede (crawling insects)’ in some obscure slang. Politicians, members of the judiciary, and bureaucrats are all byproducts of our system. Sadly, our system is one of the most corrupt, hypocritical, and pretentious in the world. I’m not concerned with Switzerland, America, or Guatemala; I’m concerned with India. And I take my motherland very seriously, and it makes me very sad.”
In another segment of the interview, Annu criticised Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy, accusing her of betraying India. “Those who are sitting on top of OTT, with due respect, have come from the ad world—who want to show everything within one minute,” the actor said of OTT platforms and acting. In the advertising world, you must sell low-quality items. You are attempting to sell a fictitious world. And I believe that is true of cinema as well. In film, you ask an actor, who is a person, to be unreal in order to portray a character while making it appear real. If Amanda (the interviewer) is a model. This is your authentic self. I’ve hired you as an actor, and I want you to be both unreal and real while playing Arundhati Roy. This is called acting.”
“Well, I’m just taking the name of that lady Arundhati Roy, with all due respect, she has betrayed the country several times,” he continued.
Annu will next be seen as the owner of an educational institute in Kota, Rajasthan, in the Amazon Prime Video web series Crash Course. The series will premiere on the OTT platform on August 5th, directed by Vijay Maurya and written by Manish Hariprasad.
