Akshay Kumar, who has had a string of flops this year with Raksha Bandhan, Samrat Prithviraj, and Bachchhan Paandey, was recently asked about his citizenship in an interview. Akshay is frequently trolled on the internet for having Canadian citizenship, and this is usually brought up when Akshay promotes national causes. Akshay opened up about it in a conversation with Lallantop, admitting that while he has Canadian citizenship, he pays his taxes in India.
“I am an Indian, from India, and will always be an Indian,” Akshay stated. He recalled obtaining Canadian citizenship at a time when his films had stopped working and he was considering relocating to Canada. “My films were not working a few years ago. “After about 14-15 films that didn’t work, I decided I should probably relocate and work somewhere else,” he explained.
Akshay Kumar stated that one of his friends lived in Canada and suggested that if he was not finding success in India, he should relocate there as well. “While many people move there for work, they are still Indians.” So I also reasoned that if destiny isn’t on my side here, I should do something about it. “I went there, applied for citizenship, and got it,” he explained. Soon after, Akshay said, he began experiencing professional success again, and he decided to return. “Then I decided to stay in my country and never thought about moving again,” he recalled.
Akshay acknowledged that he has a Canadian passport but pays taxes in India. “I have a passport,” he explained. What exactly is a passport? It’s a document that allows you to travel from one country to another. Because I am an Indian, I pay all of my taxes here. I have the option of paying it there as well, but I prefer to pay it in my home country. I am employed in my home country. Many people express themselves, and they are free to do so. To them, I simply want to say, “I am an Indian, and I will always be an Indian.”
Akshay previously revealed that he is in the process of obtaining an Indian passport. “I have now applied for the passport,” he said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2019. I am an Indian, and it bothers me that I am constantly asked to prove it.
In 2019, Akshay issued a statement on Twitter about his Canadian citizenship. “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship,” he said at the time. I have never concealed or denied having a Canadian passport. It’s also true that I haven’t been to Canada in the last seven years.
I work in India and pay all of my taxes there. While I have never had to prove my love for India to anyone over the years, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into unnecessary controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others. I hope to continue contributing in my small way to the causes in which I believe, and to help India grow stronger.”
